Carnac is famous for its megaliths and the Prehistory Museum boasts an impressive collection of archaeological findings, taking visitors on a journey through 450 thousand years of human history, from the Paleolithic Age to the Gallo-Roman era.

Located in the former presbytery in the centre of Carnac, the Prehistory Museum’s collection is a reference in European megalithism, a worthwhile stopping place before going on to the surrounding sites.

The James Miln and Zacharie Le Rouzic Museum provides a wonderful opportunity to go back in time and learn about our prehistoric ancestors’ stone architecture (megaliths), their burial rituals and their everyday lives.

The visit, covering both floors of the building, is organised chronologically and thematically, displaying maps, plans, models and of course the artefacts found in the archeological excavations.

The Museum’s collection is so vast that there are currently some 6600 items being shown, selected from the finest we have curated. The Neolithic Age is particularly well represented, as this was the time when the stone megaliths were built, with dolmens and tumulus (for burying the dead) or alignments (for symbolic reasons).

The exhibits show how burial architecture developed over thousands of years from passage graves to gallery tombs. Ceramics, flint tools, polished axe-blades and adornments, all excavated on the archaeological sites, also tell us about everyday life at the time.
