The French Ministry of Culture awarded Carnac Prehistory Museum the Musée de France status and the museum hereby abides by specific regulations.
The cataloguing of all items in the collections, registering all artefacts in an inventory is one of these regulations. While this cataloguing is taking place, at the same time, the inventory is gradually being digitalized.
Scientific Research
The museum is active in research programmes in particular with the University of Nantes (Archaeology and Architecture Research Laboratory) and University of Rennes 1 (Archeoscience Laboratory). Researchers and students are often welcomed to the museum.
Preventative Conservation and the Restoration Workshop
From 2006 onwards, a significant programme of reconditioning the artefacts stored in museum collections has been underway. The out-of-date conditioning systems are consequently being gradually replaced by more modern techniques using materials known for the chemical stability and high-stress-resistance parameters and for their compatibility with the artefacts in the museum collections.
When the possibility of putting an item on display to the public or its long-term conservation is compromised by the state of its conservation, the museum undertakes cleaning and restorative processes. Some of these processes are dealt with within the museum by a qualified restoration conservator graduate of the National Institute of Heritage (INP).
